"Cry oh cry for the world we have lost, but weap never weap for that which is not yet gone"
My Justice Project
Reflection/Defence:
Originally I just wanted to write: a poem, a story, anything. However this, for me, lacked a punch, a means of communication. On account of this I decided to make a short film, and record myself speaking what I would write over it. That was my goal, and I'm glad to say I accomplished it. I wrote roughly 1000 words in a poem, edited together a short film, and got my step dad, mother, and myself to record voice overs for it.
With the film I tried my best to communiste my overarching cynical outlook with general positive hope for the future. In my own beliefs, I think we have scared the world. And the character of Anuhm, anagram for Human, represents that. However it's impossible to pin all blame to one person, thing, or idea. That's what I wanted to show with the heroes killing Anuhm. I also, despite the shitshow we are in, think humans will keep fighting and win in the long run. That's displayed through the final verse of the heroes speaking of hope in a hopeless seeming situation. I don’t want to be too pretentious however and say “oh look at the brilliant metaphor my film is for climate change,” it's about climate change, but it's simple, and fails to bring forth my deeper held beliefs surrounding justice.
My research for this project included listening to alot of longer songs some of which I will list: Outlaw Pete, Lost in the Flood, Jungleland, Zero and Blind Terry, all by Bruce Springsteen, Highwayman, Midnight ride across the caucasus, all by Loreana Mckennit. Apart from that however I did very little if any actual research.
I was successful in my project although I did not hit my time frame. I waited too long before filming, and drastically overestimated how fast I could learn IMovie. I think however my success in completing the project is largely due to my using all the time I had. Not necessarily well as I brought up filming and editing, but there was not a single humanities class where I was not working on the project.
I have not put in this much effort, time, and hard work to a project probably ever. I usually don’t use my class time all that well, but for this project I did. I often stay in my comfort zone for projects, but I branched out and learned to edit film. I spend so much time perfecting the poem aspect of the project that I can confidently say some of my favorite sentences I have ever written were written for this project: “Cry oh cry for the world we have lost, but weap never weap to that which is not yet gone”, “Hell damnation but a passing thought to those who rule”, “Despair seeks into each home and hovel washed in pain highlighted in suffering”, “In the depth of heaven hidden is a evil man convinced he is righteous”, “We chaineed ourselves up and cried in agony at our own bondage”, “‘I run, without fears for I know I am devoid of wrong’”, and “for without one drop there cannot be a monsoon.”
The two main lessons I took away from this project that I will apply to my senior project are as follows: Right, just right, worry about how it reads later. Create realistic time lines rather than trying to fit something that will take more time in a smaller amount of time.
